Health and safety subject has come a long way over the past 30 years. In the early days HSE was mostly ignored by the employers and the employees. As time progressed the expectation of the society has widely increased and simultaneously the HSE rules and standards have become more stringent. Now a day in every major organisation the management gives prime importance to Health and safety this is mainly Due to the wide advantages it offers for the business growth and overall reputation of the company.
Nearly 48,000 workers die in India every year due to occupational accidents, of which the construction sector contributes 24.20 per cent of the fatalities, says an international report. The British Safety Council is a not-for-profit workplace health, safety and environmental management organisation, also noted that the workplace deaths in India is 20 times higher than in Britain. "India with 1.25 billion population has a strong workforce of 465 million. However, only 20 per cent of them are covered under the existing health and safety legal framework.
The ILO estimates that the annual cost to the global economy from accidents and work-related diseases alone is a staggering $3 trillion. Moreover, report suggests the world’s 3.2 billion workers are increasingly unwell.
Over the years India has made formidable development in every field imaginable, from nuclear research to successful space programs. However apart from some major organisation in India, health and safety is still one of the least cared subject in many large scale and sized organisation. This is mainly due to lack of genuine commitment towards Health and safety from the government. Manpower is mostly abused by the employers due to lack of sufficient and stringent laws, poverty and illiteracy among the masses in the country. However, these conditions are vastly changing due to globalization. Today many companies in India are truly committed towards Health and safety and are working of the betterment of the same.
